WARRINGAH RUGBY CLUB SET TO TACKLE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE THIS WEEKEND

Warringah Rugby Club will be tackling more than just Western Sydney (Parramatta) this weekend.
Partnering with the “Tackling Violence” program throughout the 2020 season, Warringah Rugby has committed to taking a stand against family and domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue in the local community.

The initiative involves a code-of-conduct committing players to refrain from perpetrating domestic violence, ongoing community engagement, game day branding and signage, as well as a review of alcohol management strategies through the Good Sports program. Club President, Phillip Parsons says “The whole-of-club approach to addressing this significant issue will have a positive impact not only within the club but throughout the broader community".

Family and domestic violence is an issue impacting all communities and Northern Sydney is no exception. In the last 12 months alone, 1,393 domestic assaults were recorded by Police in Northern Sydney. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg with many incidents going unreported.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly challenging according to a recent survey by the Australian Institute of Criminology, with 13.2% of women in cohabitating relationships experiencing physical violence, sexual violence or coercive control in the three months to May 20201.

Domestic violence statistics also indicate that assaults increase during major sporting events. With State-of-Origin, the NRL and Super Rugby AU finals just around the corner, it is more important than ever to remember that with increased drinking mixed with heightened emotions comes greater risk of domestic violence incidents2.

Jonathon Noyes, Northern Sydney LDAT Coordinator says “The program focuses on working with good men within sporting clubs, who are prepared to take a leadership role in tackling family and domestic violence.”

Tackling Violence signage will be displayed throughout the day and our 1st Grade side will be wearing yellow Tackling Violence Socks to support the initiative.

Get down to Rat Park from 3pm to join Warringah Rugby Club in taking a stand against family and domestic violence.
